“So what’s happening with TGCA?”
I’m asked that question almost every week at the moment. And the answer? Simple. We are working steadily and carefully to lay a strong foundation which will serve the cause of the gospel well in Australia for the next generation and beyond. From the beginning, the Council has been clear on the fact that we weren’t interested in just adding another “thing” which would demand the time and resources of those involved in gospel ministry on the ground. TGCA is ultimately about gospel-centred relationships which lead to more effective gospel ministry—and building relationships takes time. We are also very aware of the responsibility we carry to get this right—not to rush into mis-steps that may not serve the cause of Christ well in the years ahead.
- That’s why there has been no announcement of a landmark conference to unite all evangelicals everywhere once and for all.
- That’s why we have invested in building emerging networks in Victoria and Queensland; why we are thinking hard about how best to serve the cause of the gospel in South Australia, New South Wales and across regional Australia.
- That’s why we have taken time to work through the issues (including theological and legal) involved in developing effective partnerships with existing organisations.
- That’s why we have set up a small number of “ministry networks,” linking those in specific ministries (like training preachers) right across the nation.
- That’s why we have added 5 new members to the Council, and have invested significantly in developing and improving the website.
All this is slow work. It’s like digging a foundation or preparing soil before planting. Sometimes—as in those situations—it can look like nothing is happening. But we believe that these preparations will enable TGCA to bear real fruit for the cause of the gospel in the years ahead.
So this is why we are now asking you now to give to support the work of The Gospel Coalition Australia. A generous donor has promised to match every dollar we raise between now, September 15, and December 15, up to a threshold of $65,000. This crucial funding would enable us to move to the next stage of supporting gospel ministry on the ground across Australia, and in particular, to appoint an Executive Director to drive the vision of the Council.
